Breakthrough in clitoral repair surgery exposes women's care backlog
"It's unbelievable, we don't understand why it took so long," says Mieke ten Eikelder, gynecological oncologist at Radboud UMC. Forty years after a technique was developed for men with penile cancer to restore the glans, there is now also a clitoral reconstruction for women. There are several reasons why clitoral reconstruction took so long to complete. According to Ten Eikelder, it plays a role that in the consultation room is now more freely spoken about sexuality among women and that the taboo has declined.
