After Dark in Leeuwarden: A Student's Guide to Clubs, Bars and Nights Out

Here's how the city's nightlife works, and where to go.

Oude Doelesteeg is the student heartland. It's a short, narrow alley lined with bars, and on a busy night it feels like one long party with several doors.

Ruiterskwartier is the bigger street running through the centre. You'll find Neushoorn, the city's main music venue, plus shot bars, cocktail spots and sports cafés.

Nieuwestad, along the canal, is calmer. It's the place for dinner, a terrace drink and a slower start to the night.

A typical student night: drinks on Nieuwestad, bars on the Doelesteeg, then a party at Neushoorn or a late dance bar.

If older guides tell you to go to Club RED on the Ruiterskwartier, skip that advice. RED was once one of the biggest clubs in town. It was sold in 2023 and reopened as Zayn Nightlife, which was badly damaged by a large fire on 1 March 2025. The building has a new owner, who plans to turn it into a restaurant with dinner shows and live music, not a nightclub.

That leaves Leeuwarden without one big mainstream club. So the student scene runs on dance bars that stay open late, club nights at Neushoorn, and parties thrown by student associations.

Ruiterskwartier 41

If you only learn one venue name, make it Neushoorn. It's the city's main music venue and youth culture hub, with several spaces (Grote Zaal, Arena, Café) and a full programme of concerts, DJ nights, comedy and jam sessions. International acts play here, from indie and hip-hop to metal and jazz.

Tickets are usually cheap by Dutch standards, and many events sell out, so buy online in advance. Check neushoorn.nl for the programme.

Oude Doelesteeg 8

A dance bar in the middle of the Doelesteeg, open Monday to Saturday from 21:00 until 05:00. Weekdays are mostly students and young professionals; locals join in at the weekend. When everything else closes, this is often where the night ends.

Grote Hoogstraat 13

Open since 2010 and known for its Thursday "International Freak Out" parties, with a changing programme at weekends. Entry is sometimes free and sometimes ticketed. Check their Facebook or Instagram before you go, as the schedule changes often.

Leeuwarden is a student city, so weekday nights matter here.

With no big mainstream club, student associations fill a lot of the gap. Groups like Io Vivat (linked to NHL Stenden's Hotel Management School) and other study and student associations run their own parties, drinks and events. Internationals should follow ESN Leeuwarden (Erasmus Student Network) for parties, trips and welcome events. Joining one is the fastest way to find the nights that never get posted publicly.
