Four new West Nile virus deaths, but outbreak appears to be leveling off

Four people infected with the West Nile virus died over the past week. Although this is the largest weekly increase since the first cases were reported in August, the RIVM believes the outbreak has passed its peak. In total, nine people in the Netherlands have died from the virus this year. The virus generally causes no symptoms, but about 1 percent of infections lead to potentially fatal neurological conditions such as meningitis.
